Matching Reel to Rod
The right reel does more than hold line — it balances your rod and fits your fishing style.
Always match your reel's rated line weight to your rod. A 5-weight rod needs a reel rated for 5-weight line — for best balance and proper backing capacity.
A light rod (fiberglass, bamboo) pairs best with a lighter reel. A heavy fast-action graphite can take a heftier reel without feeling tip-heavy.
Chasing small stream brookies? A click-and-pawl is plenty. Going after Bow River browns or migratory Atlantic salmon? A sealed disc drag is a must.
Fishing in gritty, silty, cold water? A fully sealed drag reel will outlast an unsealed one dramatically. Sand in a pawl reel will wear it prematurely.
For trout fishing 100 yards of 20lb backing is standard. For salmon and steelhead, look for reels with at least 150–200 yards of 30lb capacity.
Most reels are right-hand retrieve out of the box. Look for reels that can be switched — especially important if you cast with your right hand and reel with your left.
Protect Your Investment
A well-maintained reel lasts decades. These four habits keep yours running smoothly season after season.
Even in freshwater, fine grit and mineral deposits build up. Rinse your reel under clean, cool water after every session — especially around the spool and drag knob.
Leave your reel out of its case overnight after fishing. Storing a damp reel traps moisture and can corrode the spool seat and internal components over time.
Between seasons, back the drag off to its lightest setting. Leaving a disc drag compressed for months can fatigue the drag washers and reduce smooth performance.
Once a year, remove the spool and inspect the bearing, drag washers, and pawl spring. A very light application of reel grease on the seat keeps everything running true.
